Community Service
 
Community Service encourages every Rotarian to find ways to improve the quality of life for people in their communities and to serve the public interest. The Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise is active with Community Service projects such as: 
  • Provide each year every 3rd grade student in the Santa Barbara Unified School District a dictionary, sometimes the first dictionary the student can call his own; 
  • Raise funds to provide essential care for our Santa Barbara residents through the Salvation Army Red Kettle Holiday Program annually; 
  • Make improvements at the Boys and Girls Club Camp Whittier annually; 
  • Funded kayaking experience for school groups through the Channelkeepers Youth Environmental Science Education & Stewardship Program; 
  • Provided new desks, chairs and bed linens to Transition House; 
  • Rented equipment for SBIFF's film camp at Camp Whittier; 
  • Purchased new clothing for kids going back to school; 
  • Provided beds and welcome home baskets to Furnishing Hope; 
  • "Adopted" three families at Christmastime, giving them gifts for each family member; 
  • Provided a drum major podium for the San Marcos High School marching band; 
  • Provided baby/child car seats for Angel Foster Care; 
  • Supported Explore Ecology Garden Project; 
  • Restored La Cuesta Alternative High School garden; 
  • Provided laptops to graduating La Cuesta students heading to SBCC; 
  • Provided a cozy corner at the Grace Fisher Foundation’s Inclusive Arts Clubhouse in La Cumbre Plaza; 
  • Funded kitchen appliances for the New Beginnings Veterans’ Counseling Center; 
  • Provided cages and beach signage for the Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife Institute; 
  • Providing security cameras for Domestic Violence Solutions housing. 
 
 
International Service
 
International Service exemplifies our global reach in promoting peace and understanding. We support this service avenue by sponsoring or volunteering on international projects, working with partners abroad, and more. We are people of action. In the past two to three years:
 
In Nicaragua, we provided:
  • A water delivery system to 540 homes in rural communities, thereby avoiding their daily journeys by horse or ox cart to fill barrels;
  • Aquaponics systems to 50 homes, schools and municipal buildings to grow tilapia fish and vegetables for good nutrition.
  • Musical instruments for youth music programs.
  • Dental equipment and twice-yearly check-ups for 350 preschool and primary school children, binocular auto eye refractor equipment for eye testing and medications for health clinic.
  • And established ecological brigades of young people to build trails, install benches, and learn about eco-tourism in two nature reserves.
In Mexico, we provided:
  • Musical instruments for youth band, and a dehumidifier for their storage room;
  • Projector and popcorn machine for family movie nights;
  • Laptops and school supplies, and scholarships for students to attend secondary school and university;
  • Funds for and assisted with annual cataract surgery clinic.
 
Elsewhere:
  • Sent funds to support Ukrainian refugees in Romania;
  • Provided solar lights and cell phone chargers to Ukraine.
  • Funded earthquake disaster relief through ShelterBox to Haiti, Turkey and Syria.
  • Supported National Immunization Days against polio in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
 
Youth Service
 
Youth Service recognizes the importance of empowering youth and young professionals through leadership development programs. Our efforts in the area of Youth Service include:
  • Honoring outstanding efforts through our Student of the Month Awards for at-risk youth at La Cuesta Continuation High School
  • Sponsoring the Interact Club of Bishop Diego High School
  • Jointly sponsoring the Rotaract Club of Santa Barbara
  • Providing scholarships for high school students expand their leadership skills at the annual Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) held in Ojai
  • Sponsoring an outgoing and hosting an incoming international student as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program
Vocational Service
Vocational Service calls on every Rotarian to work with integrity and contribute their expertise to the problems and needs of society. Our Vocational service projects have included:
  • Emancipated foster youth mentorship program
  • Mock interviews with high school students
  • Guardian Scholars program
  • Vocational Service Award
  • Service Above Self essay contest
  • Vocational mixers
